Old sketches

Sorry it has been so long since I've posted. The whole point of this blog was to give me something to force me to sketch and sketch and sketch. Life recently has been full of...well... life. Lots of things happening. So this then is an old page out of my sketchbook that I still kinda like (which is quite a rarity let me assure you.) I should be back soon with all new stuff. Enjoy.

Krang

My son was recently given the first episodes of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on DVD. The first series that came out in the 80's not the new show (which is total junk by the way). It's been fun to watch them again with him and while wafting in the nostalgia I'm also able to realize how ridiculous the show is (and consequently more funny). It's been a hoot. Also while watching it I realized how cool Krang (the evil emperor from dimensionX) is. There's just something cool about a giant talking brain sitting inside of a a big lumbering buffoon. So I had to draw him. Then I decided I would play with some color on him as well. I'll most likely keep detailing him for awhile. Or at least till I get bored and move onto something else. Enjoy.

Sumo Bee Color

Finally got around to coloring the sumo ninja bee for the work blog. I kind of like how he looks fuzzy like well...a bee. I'm afraid I'm getting addicted to how quickly one can do things on the computer. Enjoy.

sketches again

Went up on Saturday and met with Paul Linsley who was signing some of his books and giving sketches to people. Paul was a really nice guy and it was great to meet him and talk with him. As usual after having met someone and seen their work I go home and totally rip off their work. However, I am letting all of you know that these sketches are totally taken from Paul's work. I highly recommend you go and check out the original at highergroundpress.com. He's got some great books up there. There's something out there that I've been dying to draw for the past couple days so hopefully I'll get to that tonight and you all can see it tomorrow. enjoy.

The Ninja Bee

Hey all. The company I work for (Ninja Bee) has set up a fun little blog for drawing challenges every week. The first challenge was to draw a ninja bee. I wanted to go with something very far away from the company logo just for kicks. Feel free to go and check it out over at ninjabeechallenge.blogspot.com. Hopefully it will turn out really well. I will be posting most of the doodles I do for the ninja bee challenge here as well though (cause I just don't have time to keep 2 going at once.) Enjoy.

Back to the Pirate!

Man I've been slacking. Sorry folks. There's a big deadline at work this work and it's been eating all my time and energy. I did take a little bit of time to keep going on the pirate today though so I will share that with you. Hopefully more new and wonderful art wil be forthcoming. enjoy.

You've all felt the urge to go out and draw a stinky hobo so don't you dare judge me for giving into the temptation. Don't you judge me. What a good day.

More Mistborn Llamas!!

Here's the first image I did for the Mistborn Llama t-shirt. In theory this one is the front of the shirt and the other image is on the back. If not then we'll have 2 ideas for the shirts. Enjoy.

Mistborn Llamas

This is an image I did for a Tshirt design recently. It's loosely based on the book Mistborn: The Final Empire by Brandon Sandereson. I did the design for Brandon and a writing group he is in. The llama part is from another writer in the group and the bone dagger is from yet another writer in the group. All in all it was a fun project. The hardest part was definetly trying to work out some llama anatomy into these action poses. I did the project for a chance to read Mistborn before it was published and then a signed copy of the book when it came out and let me tell you I got the better end of that deal. The book is fantastic. Brandon has quickly become one of the writers who I will buy anything he puts out there (unless of course we barter more art for free books). I can't praise it enough. Go buy it right now. If you're skeptical about buying the book check out Brandon's website where he has plenty of free chapters and other goodies. I go there all the time to see what free junk I can get inbetween his published works. His site is www.brandonsanderson.com. Also while I'm plugging cool sites, the friend of mine who set me up with this cool gig is the guy who did the art for the maps in the mistborn book. He's one of the coolest guys I know and has a hilariously cool site. www.nethermore.com. Thanks for the help Isaac.

Pirate....yargh!

Was doodling the other day and came up with this fun little pirate. Decided to give him a quick coloring on the computer. I'm not super happy with it but decided I would post it and then post it again later as kind of a work in progress so that anyone one who cares can see how crappy things start out to how not-so-crappy-but-still-kinda-crappy they are when I'm done. Enjoy.

Seeing those propoganda posters with pug dogs the other day got me thinking. How would Surfdog begin such a dictatorship? Why with a giant robot of course.

Happy Cloning Clyde Day!

Happy Cloning Clyde Day everyone! What's Cloning clyde you ask? Why it's the day that the latest greatest videogame ever was released to the public (today!). Mark this day on your calenders. It's one of those moments that will be forever in your memory and you'll want to know where you were at that moment. Man lands on the moon, O. J. Simpson makes a break for it, and now the release of Cloning Clyde. Seriously though it's a really cool game out for the Xbox 360. It's the type of game that if you have an Xbox you need to buy, and if you don't have an xbox then you need to buy one just to get this game. Incedently I did a bit of concept work for the game. Despite that however, it looks great and is alot of fun. It's about a dumb guy off the street who agrees to some to undergo experiments for $20 and after the cloning machine they are testing on him goes awry he decides to escape from said institution. Wacky hi-jinks ensue and all that jazz.

This marks the second game to be released that I have worked on. On the first I got in on the tail end of the project and then this one only needed a little of my help to get going. I have worked on some games that I did the majority of the art for them. Sadly they have not yet been released. Fear not gentle reader, they will. They will. Till then we all have cloning clyde to make our lives a little better.

My wife decided last night that this week should be SurfDog week, meaning that all of my sketches and what not will have that in common. This doesn't mean a week of pug dogs in cool shorts (not that that would be a bad thing) for you see there are many sides to spike the surf dog. Some of them dark, very dark and ...you know..creepy. I'll try not to scare anyone with those picturs. We'll stick to the lighter side of Surf dog. On that note this is another incantation of Surf dog. Most people don't know that he is also a lucha libre wrestler. And yes, before you mention anything, I've told him that his outfit has nothing to do with the DOG part of Spike the Surf dog. Let me tell you, he din't like that at all and I've got quite a few bruises to prove it. So we'll just assume there's something inherently doggish about him and call it good. By the way if anyone has any ideas about Spike the Surf Dog related pictures I could draw this week I'm all ears (or, well I guess eyes, seeing as how I won't hear your ideas but more accurately read them). Anyhow, enjoy.

OBEY THE PUG!!!

Holy crap! I just got sent a link to www.cafepress.com/dogs_of_war/177858 where they have the coolest stuff I have seen in awhile. They have these great posters and shirts. They look like Russian or German propoganda posters. These are posters for the pug dog. I think you can find all kinds of breeds. Go check it out. I think I'm going to waste some money getting pug dog propoganda. Looks like Surf dog is setting up quite a dictatorship.

OBEY THE PUG!!

The Surf Dog

I decided the first thing to do with this blog is to have a mascot. Surf dog is actually pretty old and has appeared in various versions in quite a few illustrations that almost no one has seen. For those of you whoaren't my family and don't know where Surf dog came from (and I hope some day more people than just my family will be reading this) I will tell you. When I was 19 my family took a vacation to ?Hawaii and me and my Dad learned to suf from a guy who called himself Spike the Surf Dog. I had never heard somebody actually pray for Groovy waves before. A couple years later I needed an email address and after a few failed attempts at something else fun and witty I tried spikethesurfdog and to my delight no one had already taken it. (By the way if the real spike the surf dog wants it back I'm more than willing to relinquish it. I'd hate to steal a cool name like that. However, so far I think he's still out there on his groovy waves and he's ok with it.) Anyways the name has stuck. So here's Surfdog. Long may he...uh...surf?

By the way. Surf dog is a pug dog. What other kind of dog would he be?

Ok.

Let's see if this actually works. I've decided to have a blog where I can rant and rave about all kinds of junk as well as a place to put up recent drawings and/or paintings. My hope is that my annoyance with people that don't update their blogs very oftne will make me do more artwork just so I won't be one of them.
