Church sketches

I have a sketch book that I take to church with me everyweek. It seems that all my college experience taught me was that I can't pay attention to anyone for more than a couple minutes unless I'm drawing something at the same time. So with that in mind here's a sampling of what I draw. I'm not going to show you most of it, because alot of the sketches are fit only to be seen by me and my wife (she gets to see everything). Anywho, enjoy.

Oh No! A Tiger!

As promised yesterday here's something that's a bit more finished. When I started doing this drawing I really wasn't happy with how it was turning out but now that it's done I think it looks pretty cool. I think it must be the stripes. There's something about the stripes that makes up for my deficiencies elsewhere in the drawing. I think just about anything would be cooler with stripes. Can you think of anything that wouldn't? Enjoy.

faces, faces and more faces

Gosh that title makes it sound like I'm giving you a bunch of faces when in reality it's just five. Still it was pretty fun to just play with some shapes and mess around with styles. Didn't have time to finish one up for you all pretty like. Sorry. Maybe tomorrow I'll do something a bit more finished looking. For now you get faces faces and more faces. Enjoy.

Yet another sketch page

Didn't have alot of time today to color up an image so I just scanned up a page out of my current sketchbook. Not much more to it than that. Enjoy.

Little Pirate

Don't let this guy's size fool you. He's one tough hombre. Most other pirates you see have a peg leg or a hook for a hand, or even an eye patch, but not this pirate, and you know why? Because he doesn't ever lose a fight, that's why. You should see the other pirates that cross his path. Not a pretty picture I assure you. Enjoy.

100 posts!

Wow a hundred posts. Sorry it took so long to get to a hundred. I've got no excuse except for laziness. Looks like I'm getting a bit more on track though doesn't it? This was a drawing I did today nad then quickly colored up. I'm having alot of fun putting more color on these images than just a flat wash. I've been doing this type of thing at work too and it's been really fun and really instructive. Hopefully all of my paintings will benifit from this practice. Enjoy.

Pig

I'm having a really good time painting these up. I'm pretty pleased with the results too. This is a pig I drew this morning. Don't know why. Sometimes you just gotta draw a pig. Enjoy.

Character Sketch

Here's a quick character sketch I did awhile ago. Had a bit of fun coloring it up.I've got a bit of catching up to do it seems. Enjoy.

SOOO COOOOOL!

Something got released on line today that I thought you all might be interested in. If you go to gametrailers.com you can find a movie trailer for the game I worked on. It's not so much a trailer as an intro into the game. When you start playing this movie pops up to get you up to speed on who you are and what's happening. I think it's pretty funny. What do you all think?

Here's the link. http://gametrailers.com/player/21163.html

Enjoy.

More bellhop.

Ok well here's some more of that skeleton bellhop that I did last week. Spent a bit more time coloring him and I have taken away the pencil lines so it's all painted now. I usually fall back on the pencil lines as a crutch and so we'll see what I can do with this thing now. Enjoy.

Ghoulie

Sorry about another week without updating. I took another week vacation for a family reunion. It was alot of fun to just get out and break away from my normal routine and set up a new routine of swimming with my kids and basically playing all day long. I can get used to that. I did do some drawing while I was away and I'll start posting some more of those sketches here. For now I'll post one I did this morning at work. Don't know why I felt like drawing this guy. He is the product of another work meeting where I just start drawing and I'm not sure myself what will happen. I quite enjoy doing these. It's nice to just draw without any agenda before hand. Enjoy.

Skeleton Bellhop Now In SKELOCOLOR!

Decided to color this guy up a little bit. I've been very lax about doing any color work and I really need to remedy that. I also need to work on my painting skills in general so this will be good for me. Anyway, I plan on spending a bit more time on this guy so we'll see where it goes. I've also decided he needs a name. So any suggestions any of you all might have please let me know. Enjoy.

p.s. Spent about 15 minutes coloring so far. Let's keep track shall we.

Skeleton Bellhop

Hey ya'll! Ok, I'm going to try and do better about updating this thing. So for now I'll just give you a quick sketch I did of a skeleton bellhop. Had some fun with it, and I just love the skeleton. He reminds me of the mexican day of the dead stuff that I think is so cool. I'm not really sure what hotel this guy works at or if you would even want to stay there given who they hire, but I've heard that this bellhop is pretty nice. He's not too chatty and he always provides service with a smile. Plus I've heard that if you don't tip the vampires working at this particular estabolishment, they bite your neck and suck out your blood. Skeletons are a much better way to go in my opinion. Enjoy.

Obaday

Wow, sorry it's been almost a month. Just laziness on my part. Sorry. This is one from my sketchbook. He's a character in a book I just read. He wasn't the main character or anything but I thought that a character witha pin cushion head and clothes made out of pages of books seemed pretty interesting. Enjoy.

New Sketchbook

Hey ya'll! I just got a couple of new sketchbooks. I've been hearing about these moleskin sketchbooks for awhile now and decided to see what all the fuss was about so I ordered a couple of them off of amazon. So far I'm liking it quite a bit. The paper is really thick which I like. I'm going to start throwing some watercolor on some of the sketches and I think this paper can handle that pretty well. It's a little smaller than I'm used to but that's ok. It's nice to have something very travel sized. Anywho this is just a random assortment of stuff from the new sketchbook. Enjoy.

Meeting Sketches and Warmups

I've been so crazy lately that I just haven't kept up on posting here on my blog and I've accumulated quite a few sketches from my morning meetings and warm up sketches as well. I decided to just dump them all on you. Enjoy.

Shark boy

This is a project I have been excited about for a long time now. A couple of years back I found a website called The Monster Engine (at www.themonsterengine.com oddly enough) and at the site you can see pictures that young kids have drawn and then the artist has taken them and painted them as beautifully as he can. The end result is just gorgeous and alot of fun. Right then and there I said to myself that when my own kids were at that stage to do a recognizable drawing I would paint it up. Well my son has gotten to tthat stage and drew up this picture of Shark Boy (fromt he movie "Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3D" which he is totally in love with) and I snatched up his drawing and painted it. I had so much fun doing this. It was a hoot to paint a drawing with shapes I never would have drawn. I still have my sons original drawing and I'm going to get a frame that I can put both his drawing and then my painting in together. Anyway, that's the long way of saying I took my son's drawing and had fun painting it myself. Enjoy.

It's a bear

It's a bear. Really not much more to it than that. Enjoy.

Lion Lad

As promised yesterday here is Lion Lad, Hyena Man's sidekick. Whenever Hyena man saves someone they always think it was Lion Lad that did the saving, after all, he's a lion right. Hyenas are just scavengers, right? I think I need an innocent weasel who always gets blamed for the crimes now. What do you think? Enjoy.

Again

Well I spent a bit more time on this guy. I'm having fun with it so far. It's hard for me sometimes to break away from a loose sketch and try and make something a bit more finished and refined. So this is good practice. I'll keep going on this one for awhile and we'll see what happens. enjoy.

Hero Hyena

This was a fun idea I had a couple weeks ago. My wife is a die hard fan of animal planet and she was watching a show about hyenas. There was a guy speaking about how hyenas have a bad rap and everyone looks at lions as these noble creatures and hyenas as mangy scavengers. He was trying to get people to change their opinions on these animals. That's when I came up with the idea of a hero who is a hyena (and very good at it by the way) but whenever he saves anyone they always thank his dorky lion sidekick, because, well the hyena can't have been the one that saved me. it must have been the noble lion. So here is our hero. Tomorrow I'll post up the lion sidekick. Enjoy.

Let's try this again.

Ok. I've been out of it for awhile now. It's not that I haven't been drawing or any of that. It's just that I've been lazy and haven't been posting any of it. So with out further ado here's something new for ya'll. I really rather like this sketch so I think I'm going to tinker with the colors on it a bit more. I just felt like drawing one of those hindu gods with all the arms and such. They're so cool. I have another one of Ganesha that I'll put up soon as well. For now Enjoy.

Skeleton Sketch

This is a sketch I did yesterday. I just drew a scribble on my piece of paper and looked at it until something came to me. It turned into a skeleton. That happens alot. Go figure. Enjoy.

Meeting Sketch 2

Here's the drawing I did today during my meeting. Now this one took a bit longer than 15 minutes. I've been toying with it here and there. Still I think it's kind of fun. I'm trying to draw with a Ball point pen every now and then. It's a good excersice for me because you can't erase it. Just knowing that kind of makes me think out my drawings a bit more. Enjoy.

Meeting Sketch

Every morning at work we have a quick meeting to see what everyone is up to and check our progress. It only lasts about 10-15 minutes tops, so I usually bring my sketchbook and do a quisk little doodle. This was today's quick sketch. I'm into doing robots lately. I don't mind this little guy. He's not great, but he's not bad either. Enjoy.

Ninja Turtle

Just having some fun at work and this was the result. I doubt the series would have lasted very long if our turtles in the half shell looked like this and not the buff ninjas we all know and love. Still, it's fun. Enjoy.

Baboons

I decided I wanted to draw a baboon one day and I didn't stop until I found one I liked. Incidently there are alot of other baboons that I drew that you don't see here. These are just the ones that had enough promise to get a little more attention. I also wanted to keep going on inking things to get better at it. I still don't have the feel for working with a pen at all. I'll get there though. enjoy.

Space Ranger

This is just a random drawing that appeared in my sketchbook. I don't know why I never did anything else with this one. I still kind of like the sketch. I guess something must of come up. Oh well. Enjoy.

More toned paper stuff

Here's another piece done in my toned paper sketchbook. I decided to color this one with water color and then pull out the whites with a white pencil. I got a little carried away with the white and overdid it, but it was fun to do at the time anyway. enjoy.

Space Station Tycoon!

This is about the coolest thing in the whole world. Right now you can go over to IGN.com and see a preview of the game that I am currently working on. IGN is a big game site devoted to giving out the latest dirt on all the hot new games coming your way. On the front page you can scroll through the top stories of the day up at the top and our game is one of those stories. I have been excited about this project for awhile now and I'm happy to see that we've released some info about it. I'm not sure what all I can tell you about the game, but I will say that I was the lead artist on the game and I was able to design all the characters you see. I also got to design the ships and stations as well. The other cool thing is if you read the interview you'll notice that the main character is named Shawn. (Wait a minute, MY first name is Shawn! Coincidence, you be the judge) Anywho the interview is over at wii.ign.com/articles/768/768580p1.html. Please go over and check it out and let me know what you think. I'll see what art work from the game I can put up here soon. Enjoy.

Back Again, Again!

Wow! Sorry that I was away for so long. Life has just gotten busier and busier with no end in sight. I still have managed to do a little bit of artwork on my own and so I'll let you in on it a piece at a time. This is one I did for a cool sketchbook with toned paper. It's always nice to be able to pull out the whites on a picture as well as all the darks. It's a fun sketchbook that kind of forces me to go beyond what I normally do. Enjoy.

Back again

Sorry about the long hiatus. Nothing really that should have kept me from blogging but I was just lazy and things at work have been kind of hectic. Anyway, here's another pic fromt he book I did. This is the picture I did to accompany the little bio paragraph about me at the end. But you probably already knew that (those look uncannily like my feet after all). Enjoy.

New and Improved

Well, it took a long time, but I've updated the blog and finally got a banner up at the top. I can't figure out how to get rid of the text on my banner so if anyone knows how, please let me know. Not that I'll understand it, but I might be able to pass that info on to someone who can implement it for me. Hope you all like Surf Dog's new playgound. enjoy.

Vicunas

Here is another pic from my book. These are the three vicunas that our heroes meet. I had no idea what a vicuna was (turns out it looks alot like an alpaca (which I thought was a llama because of how similar they are)). Enjoy.

Ozzy!

Here's another character from the book I illustrated. His name is Ozzimandius (I hope that's how you spell it). He's kind of a mouse prophet. He tells our heroine of the forecoming doom. He's also a sarcastic cuss and therefore my favorite character in the book. This is him in full prophesy mode. Imagine him yellinng "DOOM DOOM DOOM!" As usual, go pick up a book over at buttersby.com. Enjoy.

A Buttersby Pic

So here's one of the interior pictures from the book I just did. I plan on doing quite a few more of these (I was pretty happy with them.) Anywho, this is one of the cavaconda (who also appears on the cover) He's an anaconda made of rock. Fun times huh? Everyone should really go buy one of these books. It's pretty fun stuff and the art is half bad if I do say so myself. You can go to Buttersby.com and then find the store from there. Enjoy.

Ninja Frog!

Here's another in a series of Animals turned into ninjas pictures. Enjoy.

Shawn Boyles....Published Illustrator!

I think that's how I'll introduce myself from now on. "Hi, how are you, I'm Shawn Boyles...(pause for emphasis) published illustrator. I've been wanting to do this post in here for a while. I've actually had the book for a couple months now, but now it is finally being sold and so I can tell all of you about it. So here it is, the Cavern of Babel. I got this project through a friend of mine at work (thanks Isaac) and it was a blast. It's a young adult chapter book about alpacas. I know what you're thinking too, "Finally, someone has written a book about alpacas. I'm sick of all the spy novels and techno thrillers and whatnot. Let's have some alpacas!" Now you're dreams are a reality. In all seriousness though I think this is a pretty fun book. At the begining of the project I was only going to paint a cover and then do two interior illustrations of the main characters. As I read the book through with my wife, however, I found that I liked the story and that I wanted to do more. I talked with the Author and we worked out that I would do a drawing for every chapter (kind of like you find in the Series of Unfortunate Events books, or Harry Potter) and then a couple more on top of that. So anyway the purpose of this post is to let you all know where you can find this book and then go and buy one (or two or three or four. I would keep a couple of them in those mylar protective bags so they'er in mint condition.) So if you want to check it out you can go to Buttersby.com (buttersby is the name of the main character). On that website you will find some options. Feel free to look around, buit if you're just there for the book, I would go to the store and it will lead you on from there. In the next couple of weeks I hope to post up some of the pictures I did for the interior as well as the whole wraparound cover without the text on it for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy.

Ninja Hippo!

A couple weeks ago I painted a go-go girl on my sisters wall for her and now I guess it's my brother's turn to get something on his wall. My brother is really into karate so we decide to go with an animal/ninja approach. I did quite a few drawings and while my brother ended up choosing something else, I personally liked this one. There will probably be another ninja animal tomorrow. Enjoy.

Superman

Happy New Year everyone! Man it's been a long time. Sorry about that. Things got kind of hectic towards the end of the year and then I took some vacation time, so while I did do quite a bit of artwork, I was no where near the internet and therefore you haven't seen it. Well now I'm back. This is a drawing I did while watching Superman Returns over the break (imagine that). I might color this guy up one day. I think it's a fun drawing. Anywho, enjoy. There's plenty more to come.
